On 4 November 2026 Google began rolling out direct checkout powered by the [Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)](/learn/ucp-explained/) to shoppers in Canada, in AI Mode in Google Search and in the Gemini app. Shoppers pay with Google Pay, using the payment methods and shipping info already saved in Google Wallet, and the retailer remains the seller of record. Google names lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons and select Shopify merchants among the eligible retailers. Until now, Google's own announcements had described UCP-powered checkout rolling out to shoppers only in the US.

## What Google launched in Canada on 4 November

The announcement, by Sabrina Geremia, vice president and country managing director of Google Canada, says direct checkout is "expanding to Canadian shoppers on AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app," so shoppers can buy from eligible retailers as they research on Google. The details Google gives:

- **Payment:** Google Pay, with the payment methods and shipping details already saved in Google Wallet.
- **Retailer role:** retailers remain the seller of record and can customize the integration to their needs.
- **Retailers:** eligible Canadian retailers "including" lululemon, select Shopify merchants, Shoppers Drug Mart and Simons.
- **Next steps:** Google says that starting next year it will begin broadening access by making simplified UCP integration available in Merchant Center, so retailers can enable direct checkout and other capabilities for their product listings. It also says it will work with retailers in the coming months to add capabilities such as applying loyalty rewards.

Google also cites its own figure that 59% of Canadian holiday shoppers plan to use an AI tool to help them shop this season.

## Why Google's Canadian launch matters for merchants

Google first said in May 2026, at Google Marketing Live, that UCP-powered checkout would come to Canada and Australia "in the coming months" and later to the UK. In September it said new UCP integration-hub capabilities in Merchant Center were rolling out in the US, "with Australia and Canada to follow early next year." Direct checkout has now reached Canadian shoppers, starting with a limited set of eligible retailers. For Canadian merchants, agent-mediated checkout on Google is no longer a US-only question: a shopper can buy directly in AI Mode or Gemini, and the retailer remains the seller of record.

Access is still limited. Google names lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons and select Shopify merchants among eligible retailers, and the simplified Merchant Center integration that would broaden access is described as starting next year.

For the wider market, Canada is the first country after the US where Google has announced checkout on [UCP](/learn/ucp-explained/), the protocol most often compared with OpenAI and Stripe's ACP (see [ACP vs UCP](/learn/acp-vs-ucp/)), rolling out to shoppers.

## What Google's Canadian announcement does not cover

- **Universal Cart.** The announcement does not mention Universal Cart, the cross-retailer cart that began rolling out in the US on 15 October 2026. What launched in Canada is direct checkout on product listings.
- **Scale and language.** Google gives no merchant count, transaction figures or rollout percentage for Canada, and does not say whether the experience is available in French.
- **Australia and the UK.** Google has announced UCP-powered checkout for Australia and later the UK, and Australian trade press reported retailers trialling it from June 2026, but this announcement covers Canada only.
