On 3 November 2026 Shopify reported how fast AI-driven shopping is growing on its platform. On its third-quarter earnings call, president Harley Finkelstein said AI traffic was up 2.6x year over year and that orders were “growing even faster at 3.3x,” and said Q3 was the first quarter Shopify saw shoppers experimenting with delegated purchasing through personal agents. The figures are company-reported growth multiples from the call; Shopify did not disclose how many orders or how much of its $119 billion in quarterly GMV came through AI channels.

What Shopify said on its Q3 2026 call

The figures below are as given on the call, according to transcripts published by Investing.com and The Singju Post, which agree on each of them. Shopify’s own results release mentions AI only in passing, with Finkelstein saying the company is building “commerce into every surface, every agent.”

  • Traffic and orders. AI traffic was up 2.6x year over year, and orders were growing faster, at 3.3x.
  • Where AI shoppers land. AI channels send shoppers straight to product pages at 3x the rate of organic search.
  • Catalog. Searches powered by Shopify’s Catalog convert at 2x the rate of general AI search. Finkelstein said Shopify powers product discovery across the major AI channels, “from ChatGPT to Microsoft to Muse.”
  • The long tail. 74% of AI-attributed purchases in Q3 came from outside Shopify’s top 100 categories, Finkelstein said in the question-and-answer session.
  • Delegated purchasing. Finkelstein said Q3 was the first time Shopify saw shoppers experimenting with delegated purchasing through personal agents acting for their users with permission. In the question-and-answer session he added that this is “where agents don’t just recommend products, but they’re also buying,” calling it “the newest front door into commerce.”
  • Shop Pay beyond Shopify. He said Muse, Instinct, Claude Duet and Grok Bot all partner with Shopify, that the agent never sees the shopper’s card details, and that with Claude Duet, Instinct and Grok Bot shoppers can use Shop Pay as their wallet for any merchant, not only stores on Shopify. That extension was announced in Shopify’s Fall ‘26 Edition on 28 October.
  • Standards. Chief financial officer Jeff Hoffmeister said Shopify co-led the creation of the Universal Commerce Protocol and is driving other standards, including the Personal Agent Protocol, with technology and retail partners.
  • Economics. Asked whether merchants pay a take rate or Shopify shares economics with agents, Hoffmeister said that when a shopper starts on an agent such as Muse and is sent to a Shopify merchant, the economics for Shopify are “exactly the same.”

Why Shopify’s AI-channel figures matter for merchants

They are platform-wide figures for AI-referred shopping, measured across a commerce platform’s merchants rather than at a single merchant or agent, and they arrive in the same fortnight as two other first-party data points on the timeline: Meta’s report on 21 October that Muse had more than 10 million users, with shopping among the top uses, and DoorDash’s remark on 29 October, as reported by TechCrunch, that it had seen “maybe several hundred orders in total” from third-party agents. The three describe different things (agent setups, platform-wide AI referrals, and orders placed by external agents at one merchant), so they cannot be set against each other directly. Together they suggest AI channels are growing quickly as a route to merchants while fully delegated buying is just beginning.

Two of Shopify’s figures bear on how merchants prepare. Product pages receiving AI traffic at 3x the rate of organic search, and Catalog-powered searches converting at twice the rate of general AI search, are presented by Shopify as results of its Catalog and product data, which suggests structured product data is a lever merchants control; see product catalogs for agentic commerce. The 74% long-tail figure suggests that AI discovery is not concentrated in Shopify’s biggest categories.

What Shopify’s Q3 figures do not show

Shopify gave multiples and ratios, not a base. Without the number of AI-referred orders or their share of GMV, 3.3x growth could describe a small channel or a large one. The call does not define “AI traffic” or “AI-attributed purchases,” or say which channels are counted. Shopify also gave no figure for purchases completed by agents themselves, as distinct from shoppers referred by an AI assistant who then buy on the merchant’s site. And the call mixes “AI-referred” and “AI-attributed” wording, so the long-tail figure may be measured differently from the traffic and order multiples.
