Natural Raises $30M to Build Payments Infrastructure Designed for AI Agents

Good for: Leaders · Builders

Natural, a US payments startup founded in 2025, announced a $30 million Series A on 20 July 2026, led by Kirsten Green at Forerunner. TechCrunch, which reported the round, puts the company’s total funding at $40 million. Natural is building payment infrastructure designed for AI agents from the ground up: an orchestration layer that lets agents hold funds, make payments, collect money, and transact with people and with other agents. The company has been operating in a beta trial and names Stripe as its main competitor.

The round is a small one by 2026 fintech standards. The reason it is worth noting is the thesis being funded. Most agent payments activity so far has come from the incumbents extending what already exists: tokenized credentials, passkeys, and issuer authorization carried over to agent-initiated transactions through programs like Visa Intelligent Commerce and Mastercard Agent Pay, and through Stripe’s agent tooling. Natural is a venture bet on the opposite architecture: that infrastructure built around a person authorizing each transaction fits poorly with autonomous software, and that agent transactions need a system designed for them from the start.

What Natural is building

According to TechCrunch and the company’s news release, Natural positions itself as an orchestration layer for agent money movement. By integrating its infrastructure, a company can allow its agents to make autonomous payments, collect funds, and transact with both people and other agents. Founder and CEO Kahlil Lalji told TechCrunch the company also intends to redesign parts of the machinery around the payment itself, including how disputed transactions are handled when an agent, rather than a person, made the purchase.

Lalji previously co-founded Ivella, a YC-backed banking product sold to Earnin in 2023, and founded Natural with Eric Wang and Walt Leung. TechCrunch reports the team includes senior staff who previously worked at Stripe, Ramp, and Square. Natural plans to support stablecoins alongside traditional bank payments, which distinguishes it from stablecoin-first competitors in the same space such as DCVC-backed Skyfire Systems.

The commercial logic behind the bet is scale. Lalji’s argument, quoted by TechCrunch, is that if transactions happen at machine speed rather than at the pace people approve them, the number of payments in the world could be orders of magnitude larger than today. That is a projection, not a result, and it should be read as the founding thesis rather than evidence.

Where this sits in the landscape

The agent payments field now has three visible architectural approaches. The card networks and processors are extending existing rails to agents, keeping the issuing bank in the authorization seat, which is the approach behind the live European agent transactions earlier this month. The open protocol efforts, AP2, ACP, and x402, are standardizing how agents express payment intent across whichever rails carry the money. Natural represents a third approach: proprietary infrastructure purpose-built for agent transactions, sold as a platform.

For most businesses, nothing changes this week. Natural is in beta, has not named production customers, and is competing with the most entrenched infrastructure providers in commerce. The development worth tracking is whether venture-funded, agent-native platforms of this kind win real merchant and platform adoption, or whether the incumbents’ approach of extending existing rails absorbs the category. Who Natural’s first production customers are, and what they use it for, will be the early evidence either way. The questions a business should be asking about agent transactions in the meantime are covered in risks and readiness.

Editor’s note: funding figures and product details are as reported by TechCrunch and the company’s news release of 20 July 2026 and have not been independently verified beyond those sources. Natural’s product is in beta; capabilities described are the company’s own characterization.
