Coinbase Turns On Agent Payment Acceptance for Its Business Customers
Coinbase announced on 23 July 2026 that Coinbase Business customers can accept USDC payments from AI agents through the x402 standard, with settlement handled by Coinbase Payments and no extra setup required, according to the company’s press release as reported by CoinDesk and The Block. The same release added real-time market views and plain-language conditional trading to Coinbase for Agents, and introduced a Coinbase Developer Platform x402 SDK that the company says adds x402 payment acceptance to any API, MCP server, or web service in three lines of code. Taken together, it is the first time a major platform has offered merchant-side acceptance of agent payments as a default product feature for its existing customer base rather than as a pilot.
What was announced
The announcement covers three parts. For businesses, Coinbase Business accounts can now accept USDC payments made by AI agents over x402, the HTTP-native payment standard Coinbase incubated and contributed to the Linux Foundation’s x402 Foundation earlier in July. CoinDesk reports the capability is rolling out this week with no extra setup for the merchant side.
For individual users, Coinbase for Agents, the company’s tooling for connecting AI agents to Coinbase accounts, gains a live order list that streams an agent’s open and active orders, plus conditional instructions given in plain English, executed within limits the user sets.
For developers, the new CDP x402 SDK packages payment acceptance for any API, MCP server, or web service, with managed wallets and spend controls included.
Coinbase Business launched in June 2025. The Block, which interviewed Coinbase Business head Sid Coelho-Prabhu, reports the unit has about 5,000 customers and roughly $1 billion in combined payments and trading volume in its first year. Coelho-Prabhu called agentic payments one of Coinbase’s “most high-conviction bets” and described the end-to-end path now in place: an agent reads Coinbase’s developer documentation, creates a wallet for itself, gets funded, pays a merchant that accepts through Coinbase Business, and settles in USDC on Base or other chains.
Why it matters
Most agent payment news in 2026 has come from the card networks: Visa Intelligent Commerce and Mastercard Agent Pay pilots, controlled European transactions with issuing banks, and tokenized-credential programs. Those efforts extend existing card infrastructure to agents, and they move at the pace of issuer and merchant enablement.
This release comes from the other architecture. Stablecoin payments over x402 need no issuer, no card credential, and no checkout page, which is why Coinbase can switch on acceptance for its whole business customer base at once. The comparison between the two approaches is covered in more depth in x402 vs MPP.
Two data points in the trade coverage indicate where agent buying actually is today. Coelho-Prabhu told The Block that the earliest adopters are businesses in the digital infrastructure space, whose agents buy OpenRouter credits, domain names, and cloud storage. And a Coinbase spokesperson told The Block that since June, around 53% of traffic to the Base blockchain’s documentation has come from agentic visitors. Agent commerce is real but narrow: machine-readable digital services first, ordinary goods later.
For business leaders, the practical read is that accepting agent payments is becoming the cheapest part of agentic commerce to test. If a business sells anything an agent can consume, an API, credits, digital services, acceptance is starting to arrive as a platform default rather than a build decision.
Editor’s note: the customer count (about 5,000), volume figure (about $1 billion), and agent traffic share (around 53%) are company-provided figures reported by The Block on 23 July 2026 and have not been independently verified. Coinbase’s own press release page was not located at the time of writing; the claims above trace to CoinDesk and The Block, both of which interviewed Coinbase directly.
